Roundup Weed Killer Leads to Cancer

Roundup Practice Area Mass Tort

Roundup Weed Killer has been linked to risk of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma as well as other cancer side effects.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report in March 2015, which concluded that glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in Roundup, is linked to cancer.

The IARC report also linked four other pesticides that were shown to cause cancer.

Other studies published in the United States and other countries linked Roundup and cancer together as well. Starting with 2001 in the Canadian Study, then the U.S. Study, and in 2008 in the Swedish Study. All of these publications found that the risk of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma were highly possible for people exposed to glyphosate in the Roundup product.

The researchers began to study the link between glyphosate and other pesticides and cancer after noticing an increase in the number of farmers who were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began to suspect the link in the 1980s.

Roundup maker Monsanto has faced multiple lawsuits filed by farmers, farm workers, home gardeners, and landscapers, alleging that the weed killer led them to a diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The Roundup cancer lawsuits blame the product’s active ingredient glyphosate, which is an herbicide designed to kill grasses and weeds that are problematic for commercial crops.

“For nearly 40 years, consumers, farmers, and the public have used Roundup unaware of its carcinogenic properties,” a Roundup cancer lawsuit alleges.

Monsanto is accused of committing “scientific fraud” so that the weed killer remains on the market, the lawsuits claim.

A Roundup lawsuit filed by the New York attorney general in 1996 charged Monsanto with deceptive marketing, saying that several claims made about Roundup were deceptive and misleading, including the statements that Roundup was “safer than salt” and “practically non-toxic” to animals.

According to Roundup Lawsuits, it has been linked to the following side effects:

  • Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
  • Leukemia
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • B-cell Lymphoma
  • Bone Cancer
  • Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
  • Skin Tumors
  • Pancreatic Islet Cell Tumors
  • Chromosomal Damage
  • DNA Damage
  • Other Cancers
