Jackson Water Crisis
Once again Jackson, Mississippi has made National News over their water issues. In a press conference Monday, Governor Tate Reeves announced the Jackson water crisis has reached a new level as Jackson residents will soon lose water to their homes, “It means the city cannot produce enough water to fight fires, to reliably flush toilets and to meet other critical needs,” and for those in the city that still have water he warns them not to drink it.
Governor Reeves said that the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency will be distributing water to the 180,000 residents affected by the Jackson water crisis. They are unsure of how long this lack of running water will last, but are expecting to be without water for several days.
This State of Emergency comes while the city of Jackson is still under another boil water notice which currently has lasted over a month. The city of Jackson has been under scrutiny for years for its inadequate drinking water which has failed to meet EPA regulations multiple times. Just last year officials from the EPA toured the city’s water treatment facility to see just how bad the situation was. The city’s failure to fix the issue lead the EPA to give the city a deadline to come up with a plan to fix this issue.
In the press conference last night Governor Reeves said the state will be splitting the cost of the repairs with the city in order to get this situation fixed. Jackson’s Mayor Lumumba did not join the Governor in this press conference but did release a statement saying the city is not cutting off water to residents.
This is not the first time that the Jackson water crisis has been the headline in the news. As a few years ago the city of Jackson admitted to knowing there was lead in the water back in 2013.
