This is not the first metal hip implant issued by Stryker. Stryker recalled the Rejuvenate and ABG II Modular hip replacement systems in 2012 after patients reported that the hip implants were corroding. This corrosion led to “fretting” of the metal-on-metal hip implant device. As a result patients were subject to metallosis, which is a type of metal poisoning caused by the release of cobalt and chromium into the patients’ bodies. Several Stryker metal hip implant patients reported that the complications led to severe pain, limited mobility, joint infections, and revision surgeries. A July 2012 study published in the journal Orthopedics found that 95 percent of patients with failed metal-on-metal hip replacements had to undergo revision surgery within three years.
