When a big rig leaves the scene after a wreck, a semi hit-and-run crash lawyer looks at the driver, the motor carrier, and proof that can vanish in hours. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office says a semi struck a motorcycle at a US 151 exit ramp near Mineral Point, Wisconsin, early Tuesday. The truck then drove away. One person died.

What Happened at the US 151 Exit 40 Ramp?

The crash happened about 6:08 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2026. It took place at State Highway 23 and the northbound US 151 Exit 40 ramp. The site is in the Town of Mineral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin. WMTV reported the sheriff’s account. The Dodgeville Chronicle and CDLLife carried matching details.

Deputies said a semi was traveling northbound on US 151 and exited at Exit 40. It continued through the intersection with State Highway 23. The sheriff’s office said the truck struck a motorcycle that had the right-of-way. That motorcycle was not controlled by a stop sign. The truck then left the scene.

A 60-year-old Mineral Point motorcyclist was riding a black 1992 Harley-Davidson. First responders began lifesaving care at the scene. The rider was taken to Upland Hills Health and was pronounced dead there. UW Med Flight and local fire and EMS units also responded.

Investigators obtained dash camera video from another semi-truck parked along the roadway. That footage helped them describe the truck that fled. Around 11:45 a.m., a detective sergeant spotted a matching truck southbound on US 151 near Ridgeway and stopped it. Deputies identified a 2022 white Freightliner. A driver was booked into the Iowa County Jail on a felony charge of hit and run involving death under Wisconsin Statute § 346.67(1).

The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation with help from the Wisconsin State Patrol and other agencies. The Iowa County District Attorney’s Office will review the case. Public reports have not named the trucking company or said whether the company faces any civil claims. They also have not released a final civil fault finding.

Who May Be Responsible After a Semi Hit-and-Run Crash?

A semi hit-and-run crash lawyer starts with the driver who fled. Leaving the scene of a crash that causes death is a serious criminal charge in Wisconsin. Civil claims can run on a parallel track. The driver may face claims for the collision and for leaving without helping.

The motor carrier usually answers for a driver working on its behalf. Companies can also face claims over hiring, training, dispatch, and safety programs. Our guide to how trucking company liability works explains these paths. Wisconsin law would govern claims from this crash. That state sets its own fault and damages rules. Exceptions may apply.

What Evidence Matters After a Semi Hit-and-Run Crash?

A semi hit-and-run crash lawyer also digs into proof that can disappear fast. Dash camera video from other trucks helped identify this Freightliner. That kind of outside video can disappear if no one asks for it quickly. Engine control module data, electronic logging device records, and the fleeing truck’s own cameras can show speed, brake use, and route after the crash.

Under FMCSA rules, carriers must keep driver qualification files under 49 CFR Part 391 and hours-of-service records under 49 CFR Part 395. Maintenance files fall under 49 CFR Part 396. A semi hit-and-run crash attorney can send preservation letters so the company keeps the truck, logs, and video. Our post on federal trucking rules in accident claims covers these records.

Why Call a Semi Hit-and-Run Crash Lawyer Early?

Trucks get repaired or put back on the road. Tow yards release vehicles. Camera systems overwrite files. Witnesses forget details. Early action locks down the proof while it still exists.

What Should a Family Do After a Fatal Motorcycle and Semi Crash?

Ask the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office for the crash report number. Keep medical bills, funeral costs, and insurance letters in one place. Write down any witness names. Do not give a recorded statement to a trucking insurer before getting legal advice. Do not sign a release early.

Wrongful death claims follow state law. Rules on who may file, which losses count, and how long a family has can vary. Some deadlines are short. Our wrongful death lawyer page explains how these claims usually move forward.
