Wesson, MS (Copiah County) — A fatal head-on collision on Interstate 55 near the Wesson exit late Friday night has claimed the life of a Natchez man and left two Pafford EMS crew members hospitalized, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The crash highlights serious risks on northbound I-55 and the need for safe driving practices.
What Happened on I-55
On February 6, 2026, at approximately 11:18 p.m., MHP responded to a two-vehicle crash on I-55. Investigators say 38-year-old Terencio Powell of Terry, Mississippi was driving a 2013 Ford F-150 southbound in the northbound lanes when he collided head-on with a Pafford EMS ambulance carrying a patient and two EMTs. Authorities are still investigating the cause.
Victims Identified
The ambulance was transporting:
- Michael Hawkins, 65, of Natchez, Mississippi — pronounced dead at the scene.
- EMT Joe Case, 48, of Brookhaven — airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
- EMT Jonathan Harveston, 23, of Vidalia, Louisiana — taken by ambulance to UMMC.
Powell was also transported to UMMC. The current condition of all hospitalized individuals has not been released.
Investigation Underway
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is leading the crash investigation. Charges against Powell are pending as authorities examine the circumstances of the wrong-way travel.
