What Happened on Highway 61 at Church Road
DeSoto County News reported that Mississippi Highway Patrol responded at about 8:04 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2026, to a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 61 in Walls. The intersection with Church Road sits just south of Goodman Road.
MHP said a 2026 Dodge Durango traveling north on U.S. 61 collided with a 2021 Honda Accord traveling west on Church Road. Three people in the Honda, ages 37, 32, and 41, were pronounced dead at the scene. One of those killed was a DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office juvenile detention officer.
The Durango driver was a Walls Police Department patrol officer, age 27. Another Honda passenger was also injured and taken to a local hospital. That passenger is a juvenile detention officer with the Sheriff’s Office. Reporting said the officer was seriously injured. Walls’ mayor confirmed a town patrol officer and vehicle were involved. Scene video showed a Walls PD Durango being towed. All lanes were closed for hours Wednesday night.
MHP is investigating. As of Thursday evening, November 5, officials had not released a cause. The Town of Walls and the Sheriff’s Office said they will not speculate.
Why a DeSoto County Wrongful Death Lawyer Matters After an Officer-Involved Crash
When a fatal wreck involves a municipal police vehicle, families face legal questions as well as grief. Who may be responsible under Mississippi law? What insurance may apply? A DeSoto County wrongful death lawyer reviews the crash report and vehicle photos. Counsel also reviews witness accounts and medical records before talking with insurers.
Mississippi’s wrongful death statute, Miss. Code § 11-7-13, lists who may bring the claim. Spouses, children, parents, and siblings are among the people the statute names. The general three-year limit in Miss. Code § 15-1-49 often applies. Exceptions may apply, especially when a public entity may be involved.
If a claim involves a governmental entity, the Mississippi Tort Claims Act can set shorter notice rules under Miss. Code § 11-46-11. Those rules can require written notice well before a lawsuit. Exceptions may apply. This post does not claim the Town of Walls or any agency is liable. It only notes that when a public entity is involved, early counsel helps families protect deadlines while MHP finishes its work.
Wrongful death damages can include medical bills before death, funeral costs, and loss of companionship. Each family’s proof is different. Courts look at the facts, not at sympathy alone.
Mississippi Pure Comparative Fault on Highway 61 Claims
Mississippi follows pure comparative fault under Miss. Code § 11-7-15. An injured person, or a wrongful death estate, can still recover even if partly at fault. Damages are reduced by that person’s percentage of fault. There is no 50 percent bar in Mississippi.
That rule matters in a two-vehicle collision where both drivers may face questions. Do not assume an early insurance statement settles fault. Keep medical care going. Avoid recorded statements until you understand the claim.
What Families Should Do After a Fatal Car Crash
Seek medical care for every survivor, even if injuries seem unclear. Ask for the Mississippi Highway Patrol crash report number. Save photos of the scene, the vehicles, and road conditions if you can do so safely.
Write down witness names and phone numbers. Keep medical bills, pay stubs, and funeral expenses in one folder. Do not sign releases or give broad medical authorizations to the other side’s insurer without advice.
Evidence disappears fast. Vehicles get repaired or scrapped. Phone video gets deleted. Early counsel helps send preservation letters. Counsel can also request the full crash file, including any dashcam or nearby camera footage.
Insurance, UM/UIM, and Who May Pay
In many Mississippi car accident cases, liability coverage is the first place to look. Mississippi minimum limits are low. Underinsured motorist coverage on a family policy often matters. Read every policy that covered the household.
Passenger claims can differ from driver claims. A passenger usually did not cause the wreck. That fact can strengthen the damages picture, but each case turns on its own proof. Families comparing options can also review our pages on wrongful death and personal injury.
If more than one insurer is involved, deadlines and forms can stack up quickly. A lawyer can track each claim so nothing is missed while the investigation continues.
