Responsibility for a fatal two-vehicle crash depends on which driver broke a safety rule, and investigators have not answered that yet. A Jefferson Davis County wreck lawyer can help a family track the investigation and protect a possible wrongful death claim. A 76-year-old woman died after a crash on U.S. Highway 84 in Jefferson Davis County on Sunday evening.

What Happened in the U.S. 84 Crash in Jefferson Davis County?

The Mississippi Highway Patrol said troopers responded just before 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2026, WDAM reported. The crash involved a 2014 Jeep and a 2012 GMC Terrain.

According to MHP, the Jeep was traveling north on State Route 184 when it collided with the GMC, which was heading east on U.S. 84. An ambulance took the Jeep’s driver, a 76-year-old woman from Prentiss, to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. MHP said she later died.

A passenger in the GMC was also hurt and went to a local hospital, MHP said. Officials have not explained how the two vehicles came together. MHP says the crash remains under investigation, and no cause or fault finding has been announced.

Why Are Crossing-Route Crashes on Rural Highways So Serious?

U.S. 84 is a main east-west route across south Mississippi. Traffic on it often moves at highway speed. When a vehicle from a crossing state route meets that traffic, drivers have very little time to react.

These crashes often strike the side of a vehicle. Doors and side panels offer far less protection than the front of a car. Older drivers and passengers also face a higher risk of serious injury in side impacts.

Mississippi law sets right-of-way rules at stop signs, yield signs, and signals. Drivers on the main road also must keep a proper lookout and drive at a safe speed. Nothing in the public reports says which driver had the right-of-way or whether either driver made a mistake.

Who Is Responsible After a Fatal Jefferson Davis County Crash?

That answer will come from the evidence. Investigators usually look at traffic controls, vehicle speeds, sight lines, and where each vehicle came to rest. Phone use, impairment, and vehicle defects can also play a role. Road design or overgrown brush near a crossing may matter in some cases.

Mississippi follows pure comparative fault under Miss. Code § 11-7-15. An injured person or a family can recover even if the driver shared some blame, though the award drops by that share. Passengers usually carry no fault at all, so they may have claims against one or both drivers. Our Mississippi car accident lawyer page explains how these claims work.

What Rights Does a Family Have After a Fatal Wreck?

Mississippi’s wrongful death statute, Miss. Code § 11-7-13, sets out who may bring the claim. That group usually includes a spouse, children, parents, and siblings, in a set order. One claim covers all eligible family members. Damages can include medical and funeral costs, lost support, and the loss of companionship.

Most Mississippi injury and death claims carry a general three-year deadline. Claims against a government entity have shorter notice rules, and exceptions may apply. Our Mississippi wrongful death lawyer page covers how these cases move forward.

Insurance often decides how much a family can recover. Mississippi’s minimum auto liability limits are low, and serious injuries can exceed them quickly. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage may help fill that gap. Our uninsured and underinsured motorist accident lawyer page explains those claims.

Why Call a Jefferson Davis County Wreck Lawyer Early?

Evidence from a rural crash scene can fade within days. Crews clear debris, and tire marks wear away. Insurers may move damaged vehicles to salvage yards, where they can be sold or crushed.

A Jefferson Davis County car accident attorney can send preservation letters right away. Those letters can cover both vehicles and their airbag control module data. A lawyer can also document signs, sight lines, and any nearby cameras. Our post on dangerous intersections in the Hattiesburg area shows how road layout can shape these cases.

What Should You Do If This Happened to Your Family?

Ask MHP for the crash report once it is ready. Keep the vehicle and personal items until a lawyer reviews them. Write down witness names and anything you remember about the scene. Keep hospital bills, funeral costs, and insurance letters in one place. Do not give a recorded statement to any insurer before getting legal advice. Our guide to evidence that can strengthen an injury claim lists what to save.

We are sorry for the family and friends of the woman who died on U.S. 84.
