Injuries from a wrong-way head-on crash are usually paid first by the at-fault driver’s insurance. A Hernando car accident lawyer also looks at your own uninsured motorist coverage and, for workers, workers’ compensation. Hernando police said a fleeing driver going the wrong way on I-55 hit an officer head-on Friday afternoon.

What Happened in the I-55 Wrong-Way Crash in Hernando?

The crash happened Friday, October 16, 2026, on southbound I-55 near the welcome center south of the Commerce Street exit in Hernando, in DeSoto County. Action News 5 reported that callers first described a reckless driver heading south on I-55.

According to the Hernando Police Department, the driver struck a guardrail in Southaven, traveled on the median, and nearly collided with several vehicles. Officers tried to stop the driver near Commerce Street. Police said the driver refused to stop, and a pursuit followed.

During the pursuit, police said, the driver traveled the wrong way in the southbound lanes and hit a Hernando police officer head-on. FOX13 reported that the officer and the driver both went to a hospital. A DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said the officer went to Regional One Hospital in Memphis.

Officials have not released the severity of the injuries or why the driver was wanted. Agencies gave differing accounts of which one leads the investigation. No charges had been announced as of Friday evening. Southbound traffic backed up, with only the far right lane open around 6:10 p.m.

Who Pays When a Wrong-Way Driver Causes a Head-On Crash?

A driver who goes the wrong way on an interstate is usually responsible for the harm that follows. That driver’s liability insurance is the first source of payment. Damages can include medical bills, lost wages, pain, and long-term care.

Mississippi follows pure comparative fault under Miss. Code § 11-7-15. An injured person can still recover if they share some blame, with damages reduced by their share. Insurers sometimes argue that the other driver could have swerved. Physical evidence and witness accounts often answer that argument. Our post on a deadly wrong-way crash in Jackson shows how quickly these collisions turn severe.

What If the At-Fault Driver Has Little or No Insurance?

Mississippi’s minimum liability limits are low. A head-on crash at highway speed can exceed them fast. Your own uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may help close the gap. Many families have more of this coverage than they realize, sometimes on more than one vehicle. Our uninsured and underinsured motorist accident lawyer page explains how these claims work.

Can an Injured Officer Bring a Claim?

An officer hurt on duty can usually receive workers’ compensation for medical care and part of lost wages. Mississippi law also allows a separate claim against a third party who caused the injury, such as an at-fault driver. Miss. Code § 71-3-71 covers that right and how the employer’s carrier is repaid. Our Mississippi workers’ compensation lawyer page covers on-the-job injuries in more detail.

What About Drivers Caught Near a Police Pursuit?

Police chases put other drivers at risk too. When a government employee’s conduct contributes to a crash, the Mississippi Tort Claims Act controls the claim. Under Miss. Code § 11-46-9, police are generally protected unless they acted with reckless disregard for public safety. Claims against a city also require written notice before suit, and exceptions may apply. Our post on when police may chase a driver goes over the factors courts look at. Public reports have not suggested any officer was at fault here.

Why Talk With a Hernando Car Accident Attorney Early?

Evidence from an interstate crash can disappear quickly. Damaged vehicles get towed, stored, and sometimes sold for salvage. Dash camera and body camera video may be released only through formal requests. Nearby businesses and traffic cameras can overwrite footage within days.

A Hernando car accident attorney can send preservation letters, request the crash report, and track down 911 calls. A lawyer can also pull vehicle data and identify every insurance policy that might apply. That work matters most when several agencies responded and records are spread out.

What Should You Do If This Happened to Your Family?

Get medical care right away and follow up, even if pain seems mild at first. Ask the investigating agency for the crash report number. Save photos of the vehicles, your injuries, and the scene. Write down witness names and phone numbers. Keep every bill and insurance letter in one folder. Do not give a recorded statement to another driver’s insurer before getting legal advice.

We hope the injured officer and everyone affected by Friday’s crash make a full recovery.
