Payment usually depends on who caused the crash and who insures each vehicle. A Jackson school bus accident lawyer looks at the other driver’s insurance, the family’s own coverage, and any claim against the school district. Nine Jackson Public Schools students went to a hospital after a vehicle collided with their bus on Forest Hill Road Tuesday morning.

What Happened in the Forest Hill Road School Bus Crash?
The crash happened Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at about 7:50 a.m. on Forest Hill Road in south Jackson. Jackson Public Schools said a vehicle collided with one of its buses, the Clarion Ledger reported. The newspaper described the other vehicle as an SUV.
WAPT placed the scene at Forest Hill Road and Raymond Road, in front of Forest Hill High School. The station reported that a car and an SUV collided in the street. The school bus ended up in a ditch beside the road. Officials have not explained how the three vehicles came together.
JPS said 13 students were on board. Nine went to a hospital by ambulance, WLBT reported, and the district described their injuries as non-life-threatening. The bus driver also received medical treatment. Another bus took the four uninjured students to school.
One parent told WAPT that her 17-year-old son was bleeding and could barely walk. Crews placed him in a neck brace. WAPT also reported that a woman from the car and SUV collision walked to a stretcher and left by ambulance.
Jackson police, Jackson firefighters, and American Medical Response crews responded. Police have not released a cause, and no charges have been announced.
Who Pays When a Child Is Hurt on a School Bus?
Several sources of payment may apply, and the answer turns on fault. If another driver caused the crash, that driver’s liability insurance is usually the first place to look. Mississippi’s minimum liability limits are low, though, and nine injured children can exhaust a small policy quickly.
That is where uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage matters. A family’s own auto policy may cover a child hurt as a bus passenger. Our page on uninsured and underinsured motorist claims in Jackson explains how this coverage works. Health insurance may pay bills first and later seek repayment from a settlement.
Can You File a Claim Against Jackson Public Schools?
Sometimes, but special rules apply. A public school district is a government entity in Mississippi. Claims against it fall under the Mississippi Tort Claims Act, Miss. Code § 11-46-11. That law generally requires written notice of claim at least 90 days before filing suit. It also sets a general one-year deadline and caps damages. Exceptions may apply, and the rules for minors can differ.
A district claim would depend on facts not yet released, such as the bus driver’s actions and the bus’s condition. Nothing reported so far assigns fault to the bus driver or anyone else.
How Does Fault Work in a Jackson School Bus Crash?
Mississippi aplica el principio de culpa comparativa pura conforme a Código de Misisipi, § 11-7-15. Each person’s damages shrink by their own share of fault, but a partly at-fault person can still recover. Student passengers rarely bear any fault. When more than one driver shares blame, each may answer for part of the harm.

Why Should Parents Act Quickly After a School Bus Accident?
Evidence fades fast. Many school buses carry interior and exterior cameras, and nearby businesses may record the road. That footage can be overwritten within days. A lawyer can send preservation letters to the district, the drivers, and their insurers.
Children’s injuries also need close watching. A neck injury or concussion may not show its full effect for days. Follow-up visits create a record that links symptoms to the crash.
A Jackson school bus accident attorney can also request the police crash report and the bus’s inspection and maintenance records.
What Should Families Do Next?
Take your child for a medical evaluation, even after an all-clear at the scene. Ask Jackson police for the crash report number. Save photos, hospital papers, and every bill. Write down what your child remembers while it is fresh. Do not give a recorded statement to any insurer before getting advice. We hope every student and driver hurt in this crash makes a full recovery.
