When a big rig breaks down across a dark highway, a disabled tractor-trailer crash lawyer looks first at the truck driver and the company behind the truck. Pennsylvania State Police say a pickup struck the trailer of a disabled tractor-trailer on Route 522 in Huntingdon County Tuesday night. Two people died. Their preliminary report says the truck blocked both lanes, and the driver had not set out emergency signs or flares.

What Happened on Route 522 in Shirley Township?

The crash happened Tuesday night, October 13, 2026, on Route 522, also called Croghan Pike. It took place in Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. WJAC reported the details, citing a preliminary crash report from Pennsylvania State Police.

Troopers said a Toyota Tacoma was heading north when it struck the trailer of a disabled big rig. According to the preliminary report, the tractor-trailer was blocking both lanes of travel. Police also noted that the truck driver had not deployed any emergency signs or flares to warn other drivers.

Authorities said the Tacoma was traveling at highway speed. The two people inside, a Huntingdon couple, died shortly after the crash.

The full investigation remains ongoing. Police have not announced charges or a final fault finding. Public reports have not named the trucking company or explained why the truck stopped. They also have not said whether the truck driver was hurt.

Who Is Responsible When a Disabled Tractor-Trailer Blocks the Road?

A disabled tractor-trailer crash lawyer starts with one question: did the truck crew warn approaching traffic in time? A breakdown alone is not always anyone’s fault. What happens after the breakdown often matters more. A truck stopped across both lanes at night gives other drivers very little time to react.

The truck driver may face claims for failing to warn traffic. The motor carrier usually answers for a driver working on its behalf. The company may also face claims over training, maintenance, or dispatch decisions. Our guide to Cómo funciona la responsabilidad civil de las empresas de transporte explica estas afirmaciones.

Pennsylvania law would govern any claims from this crash. That state sets its own fault and damages rules. Exceptions may apply.

What Do Federal Rules Say About Warning Devices on a Stopped Truck?

Interstate trucks generally fall under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules. Under 49 CFR 392.22, a driver stopped in a travel lane or on the shoulder must turn on the hazard flashers right away. The driver must then place warning devices as soon as possible, and within 10 minutes.

On a two-way road, the rule calls for one device about 10 feet from the truck on the traffic side. Another goes about 100 feet back toward approaching traffic. A third goes about 100 feet ahead. Near a curve or hill crest, the driver must place a device 100 to 500 feet back toward the blind spot.

Trucks must carry this gear. Under 49 CFR 393.95, a truck needs three reflective warning triangles or at least six fusees, which are road flares. Investigators have not said whether these federal rules applied to this truck.

Maintenance records can matter too. Companies must inspect, repair, and maintain trucks under 49 CFR Part 396. A breakdown tied to skipped repairs can point back to the company. Why Call a Disabled Tractor-Trailer Crash Lawyer Early?

Evidence after a nighttime truck crash can disappear fast. Tow crews move the truck and trailer. Road crews clear the scene. Nearby cameras may record over footage within days.

A disabled tractor-trailer crash attorney can send preservation letters to the carrier right away. Those letters ask the company to keep the truck, its engine and logging data, dash camera video, and repair records. Phone and dispatch records can show when a driver reported a breakdown. What Should a Family Do After a Fatal Truck Crash?

Ask Pennsylvania State Police for the crash report number. Keep funeral bills, medical records, and insurance letters in one place. Write down the names of any witnesses. Do not give a recorded statement to the trucking company’s insurer before getting legal advice. Do not sign a release early.

Wrongful death claims follow state law. Rules on who may file, which losses count, and how long a family has can vary. Some deadlines are short.
