La Ley Longshore se aplica a las personas que trabajan en tierra firme en las v\u00edas navegables del territorio continental de los Estados Unidos o en sus alrededores, pero que pasan menos del 30% de su tiempo de trabajo a bordo de un buque o de una flota de buques propiedad de la empresa. El plazo para presentar una reclamaci\u00f3n es de un a\u00f1o a partir de la fecha de la lesi\u00f3n o del fallecimiento, y debe presentarse ante la Comisi\u00f3n de Indemnizaci\u00f3n Laboral para Trabajadores Portuarios y Estibadores.  Las prestaciones previstas en la Ley Longshore incluyen el pago de las facturas m\u00e9dicas relacionadas con la lesi\u00f3n, as\u00ed como los pagos por discapacidad o \u2019indemnizaci\u00f3n\u2019. A efectos de la Ley Jones, estos trabajadores se denominan \u201cmarineros\u201d. Si un marinero se lesiona mientras est\u00e1 trabajando, como resultado de la negligencia de su empleador o de sus compa\u00f1eros de trabajo, la Ley Jones le permitir\u00e1 presentar una demanda y que su reclamaci\u00f3n sea escuchada ante un juez y un jurado.
