class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social Security&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/people\/veterans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">information page for military and veterans<\/a> states it plainly. SSDI and VA disability compensation are not affected by each other, so you may be eligible for both. A VA rating does not lower your SSDI check, and SSDI does not lower your VA payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Mississippi veterans never apply for SSDI because they assume their VA check rules it out. That assumption can cost a family thousands of dollars a year. If you worked and paid Social Security taxes before or after your service, you may have earned SSDI coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military service counts as work for Social Security, too. Active-duty pay has been covered by Social Security taxes since 1957. Our guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/cglawms.com\/es\/blog\/ssi-vs-ssdi-en-misisipi\/\">SSI vs. SSDI en Mississippi<\/a> explains how work credits decide which program fits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-are-va-disability-and-ssdi-different\"><\/span>How Are VA Disability and SSDI Different?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two programs ask different questions. That is why a veteran can be approved by one agency and denied by the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What causes the disability.<\/strong> VA compensation covers conditions caused or made worse by active military service. SSDI does not care where the condition came from. A back injury from service and a heart condition from later life both count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Partial versus total.<\/strong> The VA rates disabilities from 10 to 100 percent and pays partial benefits. Social Security pays only for total disability. You must be unable to do substantial work, and the condition must last at least 12 months or be expected to end in death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Age, education, and work history.<\/strong> Social Security weighs these factors when it decides whether you can do other jobs. The VA schedule of ratings generally does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Work while receiving benefits.<\/strong> Many veterans with VA ratings work full time. SSDI is different. Earning above Social Security&#8217;s substantial gainful activity limit usually blocks or ends benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"does-a-100-va-rating-mean-automatic-ssdi-approval\"><\/span>Does a 100% VA Rating Mean Automatic SSDI Approval?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. A VA rating, even 100 percent, does not bind Social Security. Federal rules say decisions by other agencies, including the VA, are made under their own rules and are not binding on Social Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bajo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-20\/chapter-III\/part-404\/subpart-P\/subject-group-ECFR4f5ff2e3c9a4c41\/section-404.1504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20 C.F.R. \u00a7 404.1504<\/a>, for claims filed on or after March 27, 2017, Social Security does not analyze the VA decision itself. It does consider the medical evidence behind that decision. VA treatment notes, exam reports, and rating records can still carry real weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, a high VA rating often lines up with an SSDI approval. The same records that support the rating may show you cannot keep a steady job. But Social Security will make its own call, step by step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"can-veterans-get-faster-ssdi-decisions\"><\/span>Can Veterans Get Faster SSDI Decisions?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, in two situations. Social Security offers expedited processing for veterans with a VA compensation rating of 100 percent Permanent and Total. It also expedites claims for service members who became disabled while on active duty on or after October 1, 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expedited processing means the claim moves to the front of the line. It does not mean automatic approval. Social Security usually identifies these veterans on its own. Sometimes you may need to tell Social Security yourself and provide your VA notification letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans rated as unable to work through VA individual unemployability, often called TDIU, should also consider SSDI. The standards differ, but the evidence often overlaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-does-va-disability-affect-ssi\"><\/span>How Does VA Disability Affect SSI?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SSI works differently from SSDI. SSI is a needs-based program for people with limited income and resources. VA payments do count against SSI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social Security&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.ssa.gov\/apps10\/poms.Nsf\/lnx\/0500830304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">policy on VA compensation payments<\/a> treats them as unearned income. After a $20 general exclusion, that income generally reduces the SSI payment. Some parts of a VA payment, such as aid and attendance or housebound allowances, are not counted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most veterans with a meaningful VA rating, SSI will be small or unavailable. SSDI, which has no income test, is usually the program to pursue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"which-conditions-lead-veterans-to-apply-for-ssdi\"><\/span>Which Conditions Lead Veterans to Apply for SSDI?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans apply for SSDI with many of the same conditions the VA rates. Common examples include back and joint injuries, traumatic brain injury, hearing problems, heart disease, and diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mental health conditions matter just as much. PTSD, depression, and anxiety can keep a veteran from holding a job. Several moderate problems can add up to a disability even when none would qualify alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-evidence-should-veterans-gather-for-va-disability-and-ssdi-claims\"><\/span>What Evidence Should Veterans Gather for VA Disability and SSDI Claims?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>VA medical records.<\/strong> Request records from VA medical centers and community care providers, such as the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>VA rating decisions and exams.<\/strong> Include rating letters and compensation and pension exam reports. They describe your limits in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Private treatment records.<\/strong> Add records from any civilian doctors, therapists, or hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Work history.<\/strong> List your jobs for the past several years, including why you stopped working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Statements from people who know you.<\/strong> Family members and fellow veterans can describe how your condition affects daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-if-social-security-denies-your-claim\"><\/span>What If Social Security Denies Your Claim?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many SSDI claims are denied at first. A VA rating does not prevent a denial. You usually have 60 days to appeal each decision.
